Did you know that Montecillo is the third oldest winery in La Rioja? Its hallmark is its commitment to excellence and the selection of the best grapes to produce wines which transcend the passing of time. Thus, Montecillo has become a byword for the region’s ‘grandes reservas’ and long-term cellared wines with historical vintages going back as far as 1926.

Philosophy

Over 140 years after it was founded, Bodegas Montecillo maintains the same philosophy as ever:

  • The production of natural red wines with personality and integrity
  • A careful selection of the very best Tempranillo grapes
  • A natural ageing process in French and American oak barrels
  • Further refinement in the bottle until ideal for consumption
  • Quality consistency vintage after vintage

Premises

At its facility, you will discover how right from the outset the winery was designed to make wines for long-term cellaring. Its design and capacity guarantee the optimum resting period for wines. It houses La Rioja’s largest manually-racked cellar where the wine reaches its maximum quality thanks to the power of time.

You will be amazed to learn that Montecillo´s nearly 1.3 million bottles represent what is probably the world’s largest manual wine rack. The bottles are stacked on top of each other by hand, with no other support. They are not moved throughout the entire ageing process and are positioned so precisely and securely that you can walk over them.

Vineyards

Montecillo enjoys a special relationship with the region’s grape-growers, who have supplied it with grapes for over 30 years.

Bodegas Montecillo has grown in recent times with the introduction of modern techniques and equipment, such as 20 Ganimede tanks.

Crianza

At the heart of the winery is the aging cellar, which carefully guards over 20,000 handcrafted oak barrels. At the cellar´s center is the barrel laboratory, where different types of wood and toasting level are tested to identify those that will provide the best flavors and aromas to the wine. A long-lasting and careful aging in the barrels and in the bottle are the basis for creating Montecillo´s future classics like Gran Reserva Special Selection.

Montecillo Reserva 2010 stands out with 90 points in Wine Spectator

Spain (January 14, 2016) – In yesterday´s edition of the member-only newsletter Insider – where the editors share the most exciting finds from their latest tastings, along with scores and tasting notes – the prestigious magazine Wine Spectator has qualified the 2010 vintage of Montecillo Reserva as “outstanding” with 90 points (on a 100-point scale).
Bodegas Montecillo winemaker Mercedes García Rupérez crafts this red wine with carefully selected Tempranillo grapes from the Rioja Alta, located on the south bank of the Ebro River, where the vineyards enjoy a cool climate in proximity to the mountain ranges. Montecillo Reserva 2010 was aged for 24 months in handcrafted American and French oak casks and a further 16 months in the bottle before release.

“Smoke, tar and gamy notes give a savory accent to this focused red, whose black cherry, toast and mineral flavors are supported by firm tannins and juicy acidity.
Drink now through 2022.”
