Rioja, has just started the harvest season. Chief Winemaker Mercedes Garc\u00eda Rup\u00e9rez shares behind-the-scenes insights.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1870, Bodegas Montecillo is the first and oldest winery in the town of Fuenmayor<br \/>and has kept the winemaking traditions, maintaining a classic style that truly expresses the<br \/>region\u2019s identity and perpetuates the vision of the founder, Celestino Navajas. With vineyards<br \/>located in the 3 subregions Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, the winery has its work<br \/>cut out for them this harvest season.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"401\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710792797.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8993 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710792797.webp 401w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Un-di\u0301a-en-la-vida-de-un-viticultor_04_0001_1706Montecillo_Alta_Sturcke_070-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/figure>\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cRight now the team is dedicating most of their time to cleaning, preparing machinery, checking cooling systems, fermenting tanks, press pumps, etc.,\u201d says Mercedes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cIt is the time of year that we anticipate the most and count down the days to begin. However, it is also a time of the<br \/>year that requires a huge effort and sacrifice from the whole team.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Harvest at Bodegas Montecillo started on September 5th with the red grape vineyards in areas<br \/>of Rioja Oriental (Tempranillo and Garnacha) and later continued with the Sauvignon Blanc<br \/>grapes, a foreign variety permitted by the appellation in 2007 and utilized for blending in the<br \/>Montecillo barrel fermented white wine, that come from a plot located 0.5 mile away also in the<br \/>Rioja Oriental subzone. The following week they anticipate working with grapes from Rioja Alta,<br \/>according to the maturations of each vineyard.<\/p>\n<p>The last to be harvested is the Graciano, which is the variety with the longest cycle that they<br \/>have and the one that they decide to leave in the vine until obtaining a ripe tannin. Harvest time<br \/>is quite long since they collect grapes from almost the entire geography of the DOC Rioja,<br \/>therefore from the beginning at the Rioja Oriental area until the highest plots in Cuzcurrita or<br \/>Sajazarra are really ripe, normally more than 30 days pass. However, due to higher<br \/>temperatures and lower rainfall the region has seen this year, this has been shortened causing<br \/>the grape\u2019s growth cycle to take place in the late summer.<\/p>\n<p>The vineyards selected for Gran Reserva have an earlier maturation due to the lower load of<br \/>grapes they have as they are older vineyards, normally the Reserva ones follow and overlap<br \/>with the Crianza vineyards. All this has exceptions in higher and cooler plots where its<br \/>maturation is somewhat later.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710792798.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710792798.webp 600w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Un-di\u0301a-en-la-vida-de-un-viticultor_04_0002_1610Montecillo_004-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEach vineyard is categorized by age and winemaking potential,\u201d explains Mercedes. \u201cDaily<br \/>maturation controls are carried out and based on the results they undergo a segmented<br \/>harvest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In general, due to the high temperatures throughout this summer, there will be two harvests in<br \/>Rioja. One results from vineyards that have had enough water to complete the ripening phase,<br \/>offering grapes with a good balance between sugar-acidity-polyphenols. The other harvest<br \/>phase focuses on the vineyards that have suffered more from water scarcity and have not yet<br \/>reached the technical and\/or phenolic maturity. At Bodegas Montecillo, the health of their<br \/>vineyards is exceptional and they believe that there is a very good water reserve, so it will be an<br \/>early harvest with slightly higher alcohol degrees on average.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710792798.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710792798.webp 600w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Un-di\u0301a-en-la-vida-de-un-viticultor_04_0000_280-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cWe believe that this year\u2019s vintage will produce wines with a high alcohol content in a large part<br \/>of Denominaci\u00f3n de Origen Calificada Rioja. However, in cooler areas the alcohol content will<br \/>remain as the average,\u201d notes Mercedes. \u201cBut, it has been a year in which climate change has<br \/>clearly been noticed, and I think it is here to stay.
