{"id":16252,"date":"2017-01-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-08T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/novedades\/the-history-of-wines-from-rioja-part-iii\/"},"modified":"2024-04-25T22:54:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T20:54:00","slug":"the-history-of-wines-from-rioja-part-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/en\/news\/the-history-of-wines-from-rioja-part-iii\/","title":{"rendered":"The history of wines from Rioja Part III"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <a href=\"\/novedades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous chapter<\/a> we left you with a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cliff-hanger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just as various investors saw the business opportunity that Rioja vineyards presented, encouraging them to found wineries that are now part of the living history of the region. <\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/tumblr_inline_ojikdiZWtS1re2n5l_1280.jpg\" alt=\"Mapa de La Rioja\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>This injection of liquidity turned wine production into the principal economic motor of the area. <\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The opening of the Bilbao-Haro railway made the transport of wine to the Basque Country considerably easier<\/strong>, but on top of that, calculations continued to show that France needed 500,000 hl a month to make up for the production deficit caused by the phylloxera plague. Therefore, on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/6_de_febrero\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 February<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1882\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1882<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> a French-Spanish treaty was signed to reduce export costs<\/strong>, lowering the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tasa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">duty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franco_franc%C3%A9s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">francs per hectolitre for liquids of less that 15<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graduaci%C3%B3n_alcoh%C3%B3lica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This resulted in an increase of the vineyard area from 34,000 to 52,000 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/D%C3%A9cada_de_1880\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hectares<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hect%C3%A1rea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 1880s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, achieving the production of 129 million litres on an annual basis. \u00a0In addition the salary of the day workers was increased by 50 per cent. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Several factors converged to create a serendipitous situation. \u00a0A virtuous circle. <\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Rioja was faced with the consistent challenge that, as sooner or later French vineyards would recover, they would have to have sufficient knowledge and prestige to ensure that this would affect them as little as possible. \u00a0Arrive on the scene to stay; so that <strong>once they had found their place they would be another option in the quality market<\/strong>. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what effectively happened was that the demand from France went down moderately as the vineyards recovered, but the large industrial wines that had formed were maintained, thanks to the <strong>total implementation of new winemaking techniques<\/strong> and the new international markets that had already been conquered. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even so, every rise has a fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7zHujgE2D8k?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1899\">1899<\/a>, phylloxera was officially detected in Rioja. <\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything started on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/5_de_junio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 June<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of that year when some vines were taken to the oenological station in Haro and when they were examined they detected the presence of the insect in their roots. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should know that they had previously done almost everything humanely possible to prevent its appearance with Phylloxera Defence Comissions even being created. \u00a0The advance proved to be unstoppable although not for lack of foresight. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to this, the director of the station travelled to the town where the first outbreak had been located, to the southeast of the village, in the vineyard known as \u00abTras la Venta\u00bb and the second in the so-called \u00abRoyo L\u00e1zaro\u00bb.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>To control this outbreak they had to grub up and burn the affected vines<\/strong> <strong>or apply an expensive treatment<\/strong> using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sulfuro_de_carbono\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon disulphide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prevent the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larva\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">larva<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e from developing wings to use to fly to new vineyards. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem arose that the location was one of the many that had not made the payments per hectare that were fixed by law, so the intervention in the area with money from other towns was seen as unjust, although as they did not manage to achieve greater financing the decision was made to intervene. When the money from the fund ran out the decision was made not to take action in towns where payments were not up to date.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<strong>t did not take long for it to be discovered in many more vineyards. It was officially a plague.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/29_de_enero\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29 January<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1900\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1900<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the province of Logro\u00f1o was declared a \u00abphylloxera affected province\u00bb by the provincial Phylloxera Defence Commission, thus permitting the creation of nurseries and the introduction of American vines (that are resistant to the insect).<\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1249\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/tumblr_inline_ojikblZKyh1re2n5l_1280-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Vi\u00f1edos de Montecillo cerca de Cenicero, La Rioja, Espa\u00f1a.\" width=\"900\" height=\"594\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This also generated conflict with growers threatening to destroy the nurseries, as they believed that they still could defend themselves from the attack for various years without the need to resort to foreign vines. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The planting of American vines made it necessary to dig up the land to a fair depth to aerate and sanitize it, a practice known as deep ploughing. This process has not previously been necessary, as the European vine resists poor soil conditions better, so new and more expensive tools were needed to carry out these tasks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, t<strong>he grafting of the local varietals onto American rootstock required practice and made it necessary to bring in experts from other areas<\/strong>. This made the cost of replanting extremely high. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the following years re-plantings were carried out using the plants from the nurseries, although on occasion they were stolen or destroyed in desperation by the many families ruined by the fall in production. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the task of replanting was very slow in the region, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1910\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1910<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Caja Vit\u00edcola Provincial \u00a0&#8211; the Provincial Viticultural Bank &#8211; was set up with the objective of helping small growers to buy grafted vines and giving them <strong>access to the machinery needed for deep ploughing<\/strong>, thus allowing them to restore their devastated vineyards. <\/span><br \/>\n<strong>This was the turning point.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1918\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1918<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> the reconstruction was considered to be complete<\/strong>, with the agreement made to close the Bank, although the number of hectares of vines did not come near to those that existed before the plague. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>But the crisis had been averted. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The formation of a Designation of Origin was just a question of time. <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the previous chapter we left you with a cliff-hanger just as various investors saw the business opportunity that Rioja vineyards presented, encouraging them to found wineries that are now part of the living history of the region.
