He inherited vines and old wineries from his sister in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elciego\">Elciego<\/a><\/strong>, founding what is considered to be the oldest \u00abmodern style\u00bb winery in Rioja &#8211; Marqu\u00e9s de Riscal &#8211; in 1858, together with his son Don\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camilo_Hurtado_de_Am%C3%A9zaga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camilo Hurtado de Am\u00e9zaga. <\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camilo designed the winery in the style of a French <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ch%C3%A2teau\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ch\u00e2teau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (this was the model to imitate, in fact Ygay started calling itself Ch\u00e2teau Ygay), bringing in 1868 t<strong>he first grape vines of French origin to be grown in Spain<\/strong>. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grape varieties <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merlot\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merlot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cabernet_sauvignon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabernet Sauvignon <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malbec\">Malbec<\/a> gave a more universal flavour to the Rioja of tha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t era.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>He brought in many novelties<\/strong>, such as the metallic mesh that covered the bottles, used to avoid their fraudulent re-filling (it is still used by some but merely for decorative reasons). <\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1232\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodegasmontecillo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1710793153.webp\" alt=\"Vides de La Rioja\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In 1874, Don Celestino Navajas Matute<\/strong> &#8211; from a family that had inherited the tradition of winemaking with a vision of the future &#8211; <strong>founded Bodegas Montecillo in Fuenmayor<\/strong>, the birthplace of many generations of its ancestors, being <strong>the third oldest winery in Rioja<\/strong>. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>His grandson Jos\u00e9 Luis Navajas<\/strong>, who studied in France like his father and uncle, took the reins of the winery and <strong>is one of the first Riojan winemakers to install cooling systems for temperature control during fermentation<\/strong>, and to some extent, one of the people responsible for the fact that wine is sold in non-returnable glass bottles. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/51vt5eH8rcs?rel=0\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/D%C3%A9cada_de_1920\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1920s <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when wineries did not keep bottled wine, as it was done to order, around 238,000 bottles from different years were audited in Bodegas Montecillo. <strong>It is currently the organisation with the largest collection of old vintages stored in the world. <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any case <strong>the key Riojan expansion started between <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1852\">1852<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1862\">1862<\/a>\u00a0when French vineyards were subject to a fierce attack of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%C3%ADdio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>oidium,<\/strong> a fungus that can destroy vineyards, having a devastating effect on production. <\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/tumblr_inline_oj5j44h7hf1re2n5l_1280.jpg\" alt=\"Interior de la bodega\" width=\"900\" height=\"594\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As if that were not enough, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1863\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1863<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an even more damaging plague spread across Europe, <strong>an insect called <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Filoxera\">phylloxera<\/a><\/strong>, that arrived in France soon afterwards in some vines imported from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estados_Unidos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the United States. <\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>As this plague took time to control, they turned to grapes that that they purchased from Rioja winegrowers.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/tumblr_inline_oj5j9f4ImA1re2n5l_1280.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"594\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This motivated businessmen from Vizcaya to invest in wine ageing cellars in La Rioja, purchasing grapes from local growers, and locating their cellars close to the incipient railway, what is now know as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abbarrio de la estaci\u00f3n\u00bb<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or \u201crailway district\u201d in Haro. The town became so important that it was the first in Spain to have electric light. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially the majority of the wineries had their business headquarters in Madrid or Bilbao, after time moving next to the winery itself. \u00a0In fact, the foundation of almost all the centenarian wineries was thanks to investors.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>The story was just beginning. <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We continue, as even earlier, Don\u00a0Guillermo Hurtado de Am\u00e9zaga appeared on the scene.
